May Auto Sales: Toyota up 7 percent

Toyota May sales rise 7 percent but lag behind market increase of 19 percent

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that its May sales rose 7 percent, lagging behind the overall U.S. market increase of 19 percent.

Toyota's sales have been hurt by a series of safety recalls that began late last year. The relatively small May sales increase is a sign that increased incentives for people to buy Toyotas are starting to lose their luster.

BY THE NUMBERS: Toyota sold 162,813 vehicles during May.

TOP SELLER: The midsize Camry and Solara. Toyota sold 29,295 in May.

HOT MODEL: The Toyota 4Runner SUV posted sales of 4,240 in May, up 245 percent in a year.
